"We are half-hearted creatures, fooling about with drink and sex and ambition when infinite joy is offered us, like an ignorant child who wants to go on making mud pies in a slum because he cannot imagine what is meant by the offer of a holiday at the sea. We are far too easily pleased." C S Lewis
Today we leave for a "holiday at the sea"...a family reunion with my parents, my 5 siblings (and their spouses and little ones) and my aunt and cousin. My heart is truly overflowing with thankfulness at God's gracious gift of allowing all 22 of us to be together...something that has not happened in over a year and a half! The sea never sounded better and I can't keep the smile off of my face!!!
But I also couldn't help but think of C. S. Lewis' quote...knowing my own heart and how quick it is to find joy in things other than Christ...to try to find happiness in making mud pies instead of basking in the all satisfying "sea" of the sufficiency of Christ. I must remember that vacation is not about making much of me but continuing to make much of Christ. It is not about gratifying self, but denying self remembering that Jesus did not come to be served but to serve. In other words, I don't take a vacation from my Heavenly Father! And, in that lies infinite joy!
